Enhanced Degradation of Melanoidin and Caramel in Biomethanated Distillery Spentwash by Microorganisms Isolated from Mangroves

چکیده
(Received: November 19, 2009; Accepted: March 3, 2010) Abstract: Four microorganisms isolated from samples of mangrove areas were found to be promising and significantly decolorized spent wash. Incidentally, they showed higher phenol degradation and COD reduction as well. The individual colorants imparting the color to spent wash were fractionated. Degradation of melanoidin and caramel was confirmed by UV and FTIR spectral analysis. Decrease in OD of melanoidin and caramel at their max and appearance of new peaks and changes in functional groups of compounds in the IR spectra with respect to control suggest their degradation. K1 was the best melanoidin (77%) as well as caramel (54%) degrader followed by other three isolates (Ku3, Rtb2 and EB4).

Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Aerobic Mixed Bacterial Culture Isolated from Hydrocarbon Polluted Soils
In this study, the degradation potential of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by aerobic mixed bacterial cultures was investigated. Microorganisms were isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated soils of Shadegan wetland located in southwest of Iran. The degradation experiments were conducted in liquid cultures. PAH or PAHs concentration was 100 mg/L at the beginning of degradation e...
متن کاملDecolorization of a recalcitrant organic compound (Melanoidin) by a novel thermotolerant yeast, Candida tropicalis RG-9
BACKGROUND Sugarcane distilleries use molasses for ethanol production and generate large volume of effluent containing high biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) along with melanoidin pigment. Melanoidin is a recalcitrant compound that causes several toxic effects on living system, therefore, may be treated before disposal. The aim of this study was to isolate a potent...

Toxic Effects of Distillery Sludge Amendment on Microbiological and Enzymatic Properties of Agricultural Soil in a Tropical City
Distillery sludge application in degraded soils is amongst the most important economical resources for the soil fertility amelioration through improvement in soil water-holding capacity, texture, structure, nutrients retention, roots penetration, and reduction in soil acidity [1-3]. Presently due to the ever increasing number of sugar mills and distillery units in the country, it is now become ...
متن کاملUF as Pretreatment of RO for Tertiary Treatment of Biologically Treated Distillery Spentwash
Distillery spentwash contains high chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), color, total dissolved solids (TDS) and other contaminants even after biological treatment. The effluent can’t be discharged as such in the surface water bodies or land without further treatment. Reverse osmosis (RO) treatment plants have been installed in many of the distilleries at tertiary level ...
